 Hiking Gear

Minimizing Weight

To comfortably carry the additional weight added by heavy camera gear, I try to reduce weight in every other area. The goal is to avoid having a total pack weight more than 1/5 or 20% of your body weight. Sometimes that’s not possible because of the length of the trip or the temperatures involved but it’s a good starting point.

Unfortunately ultralight gear can be expensive, so it’s best to slowly build up your gear over time. The big four that you should try reduce first are your backpack, shelter, sleeping bag and sleeping pad. From there you just need to ensure you are only bringing what you truly need.
